ABOUT INVERLOCH
Inverloch is a beach town located 143 kilometres (89 mi) south east of Melbourne, via the South Gippsland Highway on the Bass Coast. Inverloch originally became popular for the calm waters of Anderson Inlet and is now also known for the discovery of Australia's first dinosaur bone. The township swells from 6000 residents to 25,000 in the summer months, this is largely due to its beautiful beaches, great food and Melbourne style coffee. The towns accessibility and traffic flow in the summer is supreme when compared to other seaside towns, thus making Inverloch the perfect place to enjoy long days by the waves.
BUNURONG COSTAL DRIVE
The Bunurong aboriginal people were custodians of this stretch of coast for thousands of years prior to white settlement. The Boakoolawal clan lived in the Kilcunda area south of the Bass River, and the Yowenjerre were found west of the Tarwin River along what is now the Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park. Middens containing charcoal and shellfish mark the location of their campsites along the coast.
Inverloch was first named as Anderson's Inlet after Samuel Anderson, the first European to settle who, together with his brothers and Robert Massie, ran cattle and grew wheat in the area. It was later renamed Inverloch, after Loch Inver (Lake Entrance) in Scotland. The Post Office opened on 1 September 1883 and Anderson's Inlet and was renamed Inverloch in 1889. As the area grew, the township developed into a port for the shipment of black coal from Wonthaggi to Melbourne. It has continued to thrive, benefiting from a later burst of development, quality homes, safe beaches, and the desire for a sea change by many.
